In February 1955, Coco Chanel introduced the bag that would later become known as the 2.55.
One of its most important innovations was the shoulder strap.
Coco Chanel wanted women to have their hands free instead of constantly carrying a handbag, creating a design that was both practical and liberating.
🔗 Where did the iconic chain come from?
One widely told story connects the chain to Coco Chanel’s years at the convent, where nuns were known to wear chains holding their keys. This image is often cited as one possible source of inspiration for the 2.55 chain.
The chain on the original 2.55 is also different from the later leather-interwoven chain that became another signature CHANEL design.
👀 Why is the lining burgundy?
The burgundy lining of the 2.55 is often associated with the color of the uniform Coco Chanel wore during her years at the Aubazine convent.
💌 And there is another iconic detail: the hidden zip pocket.
The 2.55 features a hidden zippered compartment inside the flap. According to a popular story, Coco Chanel used this pocket to keep private letters.
